Alex Stone was born on August 24, 1949 in Orlando and grew up in Winter Park in an old cracker home which once belonged to architect James Gamble Rodgers. The house originally was sited overlooking Lake Osceola, but was moved to Bonita Drive in the late 40's to make way for Gamble Rodger's new home to be built in Temple Grove.
Because Alex's father was a professor at Rollins College, the family had summers free and these were spent in a small cabin in the Green Mountains of Vermont where Alex developed a love for the outdoors and nature.
While growing up, Alex loved to build things (ranging from tree houses to hydroplanes) and loved to draw and this combined with a ninth grade career report, led to architecture and the University of Florida. While at Florida, Stone studied for two years under Professor Harry Merritt who had worked with both Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius and this cemented Alex's love of modern architecture.
After graduating in 1972, Alex became a registered architect a year later while working in the Winter Park office of W. Sullivan Donahoo. Donahoo, who had studied at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen studio was an advocate of Wright's organic architecture and this provided a nice counterpoint to some of the European Modernism that was presented in school.
In 1976, after a severe recession had wiped out many small architectural firms, Stone went to work for Helman Hurley Charvat Peacock Architects in Winter Park and remained there for 20 years in the capacity of senior design architect. During this time, he designed many of the area's modernist structures including K 92 FM Radio Station, Florida Eye Clinic, Cancer Centers for Winter Park Hospital and Florida Hospital East, SunBank Altamonte Office Building and Heart of Florida Replacement Hospital.
In 1996, Alex left HHCP Architects and opened his own design studio. The practice is currently focused on providing quality design solutions for new residences, residential additions and small commercial projects.
Alex currently lives in Maitland in a modernist home of his own design and construction, with wife Cynthia and daughter Ciera. Hobbies include oil painting, surfing and day trading stock index futures
